The Coffee Supply Chain: From Bean to Cup

Every cup of coffee served in a cafe, hotel, or restaurant in the UAE represents the culmination of a complex global supply chain spanning thousands of kilometers and involving dozens of participants. Understanding this journey — from the coffee farm to the consumer's cup — is essential for anyone involved in the wholesale coffee trade. At Nextbridge, we manage critical stages of this chain, ensuring that the coffee our clients receive is consistently fresh, high-quality, and competitively priced.
The Origins: Where Great Coffee Begins
Coffee is grown in over 70 countries within the equatorial belt known as the Bean Belt. The two primary species are Arabica, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of global production and is prized for its smooth, complex flavor profile, and Robusta, which is hardier, higher in caffeine, and often used in espresso blends and instant coffee. Key Arabica-producing regions include Ethiopia — the birthplace of coffee and home to distinctive varieties like Yirgacheffe and Sidamo — Colombia, known for mild, well-balanced beans; Kenya, famous for bright acidity and berry notes; and Brazil, the world's largest producer. For Robusta, Vietnam, Uganda, and Indonesia are the dominant sources.
Harvesting and Processing
Coffee is not a commodity that can be rushed. Cherries are typically hand-picked when ripe, a labor-intensive process that directly affects quality. After harvesting, the beans must be processed — either through the washed method that produces clean, bright flavors, or the natural method that yields fuller body and fruity notes. The processed green beans are then graded by size, density, and defect count before being packed in jute or GrainPro bags for export.
Shipping and Logistics
Green coffee beans are typically transported in 60kg bags loaded into shipping containers. Temperature and humidity control during transit are critical — excessive heat or moisture can cause mold, fermentation, or flavor degradation. At Nextbridge, we work with logistics partners who specialize in food-grade container shipping with temperature monitoring throughout the journey. Upon arrival at UAE ports, our team manages customs clearance, quality sampling, and transfer to our climate-controlled storage facilities.
Roasting and Distribution
While some of our clients purchase green beans for in-house roasting, many rely on our network of partner roasters who can deliver roasted coffee to precise specifications. Roast profiles are developed collaboratively — light roasts preserve origin characteristics, medium roasts balance acidity and body, and dark roasts deliver bold, smoky intensity. The final step is distribution: roasted coffee is delivered to cafes, hotels, and retailers with a focus on freshness, typically within days of roasting.
